In San Martín, Peru an important advancement for the protection of 5,160 acres (2,088 hectares) of Amazonian ecosystems has been achieved with the granting of the Aguas Claras – Amangay conservation concession to the El Afluente Aguasclarino Association (AELAAC). This association is made up by women committed to protecting Amazonian ecosystems.

Amazonía
The Aguas Claras – Amangay conservation concession spans over five thousand acres of lowland tropical montane forests (Yungas) in the Rioja Province of San Martín, in an area of high biodiversity where Amazonian ecosystems meet the Andes. The Concession is in the buffer zone of the Alto Mayo protected forest and is adjacent to the Bosques de la Bella Durmiente conservation concession. Being connected with these other conservation areas, the Aguas Claras – Amangay conservation concession forms an important biological corridor for the connectivity of ecosystems in the region supporting emblematic wildlife and plant species like the Andean saddle-back tamarin (Saguinus leucogenys), the yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda), the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) and the Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata).

Amazonía
The conservation concession was granted on October 4th, 2024 and will be valid for the next 40 years, with the option for renewal. This recognition will allow the El Afluente Aguasclarino Association to develop activities for ecological protection, scientific investigation, and environmental education with the objective of maintaining and protecting the concession’s biodiversity and to guarantee the provision of the environmental services the area hosts under a vision of sustainable stewardship.
